The perfect family. A beautiful home. And a twist. ‘Masoom’ unravels what happens when an ‘ideal’ family is confronted with an accidental little moment from the past. DK’s discovery of a son from a past affair threatens to shatter his family and marriage. A chance phone call from distant Nainital and DK is told he has a son. His life turns upside down as he confesses to his wife Indu about the momentary lapse in marriage. His son Rahul, now nine, has lost his mother and has no one to go to. Despite a completely hostile Indu, devastated with her husband's infidelity, DK brings the boy home till he figures a plan of action. The children bond but Indu can't bear the sight of the innocent Rahul, a live breathing reminder of DK's betrayal. How the family comes to terms forms the rest of the story. Shabana Azmi as Indu a young mother juggling home and family vociferously defying her maternal feelings for Rahul is stellar. Her monologue in an opening scene, as she unpacks her shopping and tends to her home is so familiar, you almost see your own mother in her. Naseeruddin Shah handles his flawed character, his longing for his son and pining for acceptance with rare sensitivity and sheer stature. In one of the film’s most heartbreaking scenes Indu sings her daughters to sleep while Rahul, alone and scared in this alien home, watches longingly at them from outside, missing his own mother. The milieu is so real you feel it’s a slice from life. You know these people and become part of their crisis. And you realize we all live with our own flaws in the quest for acceptance and love. Shekhar Kapoor inspired by the 1980 Erich Segal novel "Man, Woman and Child" helms his first film with dexterity. Tempered with a lyrical screenplay by Gulzar and heart-warming music by R.D. Burman, the film is nuanced and pitch perfect with natural acting. The sound track enthrals, from the soulful "Tujhse Naraz” and “Do naina” to the playful “Huzur Is Kadar" and the song that stole every child’s heart in the 1980s "Lakdi Ki Kaathi". . Oh the things she did. From the first swaddle of love to filling our hearts with it. That fierce tigress who could do anything for her cubs. From homework to making home a haven. Ensuring our colour pencils were always sharpened so we could colour the world in the brightest of shades. The one who just knew what we wanted at lunch. And made us smile at break, our favourite snack neatly packed. And when we came home, a hot surprise. Whether she was at home or working. The one who knew just what we wanted to when. And where. And made it happen. The one who knew just when we went wrong. And where. And taught us how to fix it. The one who made us realize our dreams. And pushed us to conquer them. From every sum in Math to puzzle in GK. From college applications to job placements, she was there for it all. Whether she understood it or not. And the birthday parties. There couldn’t be a better planner in the world. Or a more popular one. She introduced us to books. Many many books. Along with running a perfect home. A tight ship. An argosy of love. Little treats and big ones. She seemed to always have that “little extra” tucked for that odd demand we had. Always delivering to our tiniest whims. Yet ruling our little kingdom with an iron hand. To hell and back she could go for us. Santa, tooth fairy, guardian angel all in one. Omnipresent. And a dramatic Mother India at times. That gentle tuck of a blanket on the nights that got cold. To the sleepless nights she spent when we got sick. She did everything. And the things she did behind your back. Those sacrifices big and small. That you would never know. Taking that jab even from Papa at times. Remember when you watched her get ready. In awe. She was the most beautiful woman in the world. And now she’s older and her skin is translucent. She still smells divine. Still always there. Concerned about that knee injury of mine. Ensuring I have my sweater on, on a cold winter’s day. Asking if I eat my 5 almonds a day. . In the heart of a dry, dense, dusty land, Where the Sal trees stand like sentinels grand, Their leaves sway gently in the warm, humid breeze, Beneath the vast canopies, nature’s ease. The Mahua blooms under the sun’s tender kiss, Sweet nectar spills forth, a wild, fragrant bliss, While tall bamboo sways, a languorous dance, In this beauteous rhythm, a Barbet finds chance. The wild elephant trumpets, a call to the kin, Majestic and mighty, where the jungle begins, With each mighty footfall, the earth seems to shake, In this wild Indian jungle, life thrives and awakes. The magic of the jungle, a wanderluster’s heart bold, Dusty pug marks reveal journeys untold, Each print in the dust speaks of secrets concealed, In this age-old dance, nature’s wonder is revealed. And amidst the stillness, the chital calls clear, An alarm echoing, a signal to adhere, In the rush of the jungle, where spirits take flight, A world full of wonder, where day turns to night. A tiger prowls silently, stealth in his gaze, His stripes like old stories, lost in the maze. A flash of embers his eyes are ablaze, It’s in the heart of the jungle, where mystery lays. With Venus across me, Jupiter above me and Mars behind me, all of which I see with my naked eye, all so close I can leap and touch them; I am in the most virgin of deciduous evergreen forests. With the clearest and freshest of skies. Amidst Sal and Mahua trees. And the Bamboo. In the land of the Tiger. And the elephant... Hearing an alarm call of the Sambar. Spotting fresh pug marks. Oh the rush of it all. And seeing the 1OC AD Sheshshaiya trinity of the lying Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma. And the Sindoor tree. The beautiful Tara, Bajrang, D1, the Chakradhara cubs. And the mighty wild elephant. Coloured with splashes of birds and butterflies. Oh just to be in the jungle. The most carnal, exhilarating, liberating, grounding and spiritual feeling. . Mowgli, Bagheera, Baloo, Kaa, Akela, Sher Khan. Many have grown up with these names in the subcontinent. First made famous in Rudyard Kipling’s 1894 stories, ‘The Jungle Book’ the story of Mowgli, a “man-cub” growing up in the wild, raised by wolves, has held a fascination like no other. The enrapturing tale of Mowgli whirls around a little boy lost in the jungle amidst a bloody encounter between Sher Khan the tiger and humans. Brought to safety and raised by wolves under the fierce protection and guidance of Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear, Mowgli is a loved misfit. A wolf boy, a boy wolf. Inspired by mythology and lore from the stories in Panchatantra and Jataka Tales, the tale of Mowgli has been interpreted and adapted in various forms. To the child, Mowgli’s is a fable of a world of dreams where animals talk, adventures happen as one dives into the ever captivating realm of child-like mystery. A light-hearted feel-good story with amusing characters. To others, Mowgli is an embodiment of a child becoming an adolescent. And finally to a few it is about a much darker side which versions of Disney as we know it, erased. It is about the shadows and fears of humanity. An orphaned Mowgli in his inevitable exile into the jungle, confronting the moral dilemmas of civilization. The jungle is Mowgli’s childhood, one which will soon be left behind to adulthood. Bagheera is the voice of reason, Baloo a symbol of hedonism, careless pleasures. The fire that Mowgli is acquainted with in the story is a manifestation of knowledge, bringing form into chaos. The knowledge that ultimately leads to Mowgli’s freedom and victory. Rudyard Kipling was no benefactor of India and overtly used colonial stereotypes. His poetry boasts of poems like ‘The White Man’s Burden’. However, in ‘The Jungle Book’, via the magic and mystery of fiction that haunt the imagination, Mowgli came to us and enthralled our imaginations. The ‘man-cub’ somehow became a friend to us all, his life reminding us of a recovered memory, of the innocence of childhood. .
